Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

So it's 45 degrees below zero out there.  How is everyone staying warm?  Well, the mushers are putting on layers and running or polling alongside their team to keep themselves warm (and I'm sure they have a few other handy tricks up their sleeves).  How are the dogs staying warm?

Sebastian Schunelle, Iditarod Insider reporter, has a very informative post about how the different mushers bed their dogs down.  There are as many opinions on this as there are mushers.  Don't forget, these dogs are bred for cold weather and live in it all their racing lives.  They are not like our house dogs.  Here are a few photos of sleeping dogs:

I can tell you that my whippets think this all of these options are horrible.  They aren't all that fond of forty degrees ABOVE zero, thank you very much, let alone anything less than zero.  Here's my 13-year-old Carmen staying warm with not one, but two blankets. Nine-year-old Ochenta is slightly more warm blooded and is happy for about 10 minutes in the snow in her stylish coat. (Sorry, had to put in a plug for my dogs, too, LOL)

  1. Those are excellent pictures! I never really thought of how or where the dogs slept while on the trail! Nice pics of the Whippets too!
